Sauna and Pilates? Absolutely.
A quality sauna does wonders to alleviate muscle soreness, manage pain, and simply boost your wellness.
I use the Sunlighten mPulse sauna at our Pitt Town Pilates studio (less than ten minutes from Windsor in the glorious Hawkesbury). Using infrared heat in place of steam or hot rocks, it delivers a more consistent and comfortable sauna experience (and an entertaining one, with WiFi available at the touch of a button!).
Most importantly, it’s the only infrared sauna on the market that harnesses all three wavelengths on the infrared spectrum.
Why is this so important? Different parts of the spectrum provide different health benefits, so each session can be customised to your particular needs.
Purely because of the way the heat is generated, an infrared sauna facilitates the elimination of more toxins than conventional approaches.
The way a conventional humid steam sauna forces the body to sweat – by heating the surrounding air – produces perspiration that’s 97% water and 3% toxicity.
The way an infrared sauna forces the body to sweat – by penetrating up to 4cm into the body’s tissue – produces perspiration that’s 80% water and 20% toxicity.
Infrared is a safe wavelength of light that we feel as heat.
Hot stone and steam saunas increase the temperature of the surrounding air, making it difficult to breathe. However infrared saunas increase our core body temperature as the wavelengths are absorbed by our tissue, muscle, and bones.
In a nutshell – a traditional saunas heat up the air around us, while infrared saunas heat us up from the inside.
Increasing our temperature from the inside stimulates the lymphatic, immune and cardiovascular systems, offering a range of health benefits.

Skin tissue is penetrated using near infrared at an intensity that’s both low and constant.

It’s up to you – there are no hard and fast rules! You can choose to sauna immediately after a class, as stand-alone recovery or wellness session, or a combination of both. If you’re looking for sleep benefits, later in the day is ideal.
Infrared heat occurs naturally as the warmth we feel from the sun. Think of the wavelengths as energy.
The sauna’s infrared heaters and heat sensors deliver these wavelengths safely (it’s completely different to UV light) and consistently (with no hot or cold spots).
Our Pitt Town studio has a Sunlighten mPulse Believe sauna, which has been specifically developed for single or double use.
Whatever you’d like! Some people do nothing but close their eyes and relax.
WiFi means you can also play music, listen to podcasts, watch an episode of that Netflix series you’ve been bingeing…
Whatever you’re comfortable in! Some prefer towels, others prefer bathing suits (some even sweat it out in just their underwear!).
Tip: Remove any metal jewellery beforehand to prevent scorching!
Your core temperature will be increasing, so drink at least one glass of water before beginning your session.
Take a (plastic – not metal or glass) water bottle with you and drink throughout.
Afterwards, drink at least 750ml of water or electrolyte to rehydrate. Remember – hydration is key!
You’ll need a drink and towel to dry off afterwards. Don’t worry about a towel for the sauna – I’ll provide clean bamboo cotton towels for each session.
Why? Bamboo carbon fibre re-emits 91% of the infrared heat absorbed, so our bamboo towels are designed to maximise the effectiveness of each session. (They’re also incredibly comfortable, highly absorbent, and super-hygienic!)
Yep! Our towels are made from air dried bamboo, which is then charred at 800ºC before being ground into fine nano particles, added into synthetic fibres to create yarn… you get the drift.
Thanks to the bamboo minerals, our towels have excellent infrared emission and are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and deodorising (trust me –after 45-minutes, you’ll be super-grateful for their odour absorbing qualities!).
